Approaches to Film: Novels and Adaptations

This course examines nineteenth-century British culture through novels and film adaptations. Over the course of the semester, students read British novels and learn about their social, cultural, and historical contexts. Following the readings, students view the novels’ film adaptations, analyze these cross-cultural and cross-era re-tellings, and discuss the strengths and limitations of film adaptation as a conduit of culture.
